What’s Special About the Taj Mahal?

Widely called the “Symbol of Love”, the Taj Mahal invites people from across the globe to visit and admire its beauty. It is not just the finest illustration of Mughal architecture in India but also one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The most famous story of the Taj Mahal is that it was built by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his loving wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away after giving birth to his 14th child in 1631. Then, the emperor was left heartbroken and this is why he decided to build the Taj Mahal in her memory.

The construction was begun in 1632 and its main building was finished in 8 years. The entire monument was not completed until 1653. He appointed 20,000 people for 22 years to work on the architecture of this glittering white marble structure.

Then, Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb overthrew the emperor soon after the monument was built. Shah Jahan was imprisoned inside the Agra Fort for his entire life where he used to look at this beautiful monument through the window admiring it and remembering his beloved wife. After the death of Shah Jahan, he was buried alongside his wife Mumtaz inside the tomb. It is not just the beauty of this white-marbled structure that attracts people across the globe but also the romantic yet painful love story of Shah Jahan.
